The new book by author Walter Otton
In ten years he will be forty. Half a lifetime gone.
He and two friends have booked a week off work to walk the length of a River. Each night, after twenty miles of walking, he experiences wild dreams from the carriages of London tube trains: sometimes unabandoned freedom and at other times utter torment – where his deepest fears surface.
He spent his twenties working with young people born onto council estates in and around South London. One day he got married, although he never thought he ever would. Now he is twenty-nine, about to hit thirty.
His twenties are coming to an end.
The voice of their Creator has inspired them to walk. Captain Seagull Si, the only one who can read a map and has a proper pair of walking shoes, explains his desire to walk the River Thames. His cousin Larry decides to use the walk to raise sponsor money to build a spanking new centre on the patch of the biggest slum in Kenya, to offer provision for the Aids orphans, education for the unschooled and a hospital for the sick.
As they walk the Thames path they reminisce about their spiritual upbringing, their teenage decisions to follow Jesus and subsequent discovery of Cutting Edge gigs on England's South Coast, tell stories about following their football teams, and make predictions about what the next ten years may bring. In ten years they will all be forty years old.
The next ten years count.
Can they make a difference in the world they live in? They know their lives are not a dress rehearsal. They only get one chance.
Now is the time.
